Review of Green People Organic Natural Skincare Products for Mum and Baby

Liz over at Green People was very lovely and sent me a selection of Green People products to review here on My Mummy Reviews. I have always tried my utmost to avoid using products with harsh chemicals on my daughter and Green People do not use anything harsh in their products…only natural, safe, organic ingredients. This makes my day!
Green People is a company that specialises in organic body care products and the company was started in 1997 by Mumpreneur Charlotte Vøhtz.  Back in 1992 when Charlotte’s daughter Sandra was just 2 she found her daughter to be suffering from severe allergies, eczema and constant itching. She was determined to help Sandra overcome these problems and in the end she found that Sandra’s allergies were being triggered by chemical-based products such as body care products and household products. After she discovered what was causing the problem she eliminated the use of products with man-made chemicals and instead turned to natural alternatives. Charlotte made sure Sandra had a balanced Omega 3 and 6  intake and she used a herbal cleansing tonic on her skin. She found that Sandra’s skin soon cleared up and she stopped the constant itching.   Charlotte was so pleased that her natural remedies and home-made skin care products had helped her daughter and she wanted to introduce others to the wonder of natural products and hopefully help them too.  Charlotte already knew a lot about herbal medicine and with her background of 11 years in the pharmaceutical industry and a nursing background she felt she was ready to launch her own company ‘Green People’. After this decision she spent several years perfecting the products and the first ‘Green People’ products started to be sold in independent health food stores in August 1997.

Charlotte has always said she would NEVER use chemicals such as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), Parabens or synthetic fragrances or colourants in her products.  Instead she chooses to source natural, organic alternatives which are kinder to your skin and effective too. Green People products use organic essential oils as they are superior to synthetic fragrances as they not only give the products a beautiful scent but they also give the products powerful properties.  Due to the Green People products having a high percentage of organic ingredients and a lack of synthetic chemicals, The Soil Association, Organic Food Federation and EcoCert are all able to certify the products as organic.  The Green People company is an ethical company and each year they donate 10% of their net profit to charitable causes that are linked with ‘Green’ or environmental issues. Now to talk about the fantastic products that were sent to me. I received a 7ml tube of Soothing Baby Salve, a full size 150ml tube of No Scent Baby Wash and Shampoo, a full size 150ml tube of No Scent Baby Lotion, a 5ml trial size facial oil and a 10ml trial size of Gentle Cleanse.
I gave my mum the anti-ageing facial oil and she loved it. She said the facial oil was absorbed very quickly into her skin and she really knew that it was working as it made her skin so soft. The fragrance is divine and it smells very luxurious. The facial oil has a slight fragrance of Rose Geranium & Rosemary – in my opinion it really reminds me of the smell of an expensive Decleor product I have used in the past. The product is suitable for all skin types and it should help support the structure of the skin.. It is suitable for people who may be prone to eczema or psoriasis. There is rosehip oil in the product to improve skin elasticity. The website says it has been recommended by ‘YOU’ magazine. . . so it’s not just us that love it!  The trial size facial oil costs £3.60 and the full size 30ml bottle costs £16.85. This does mean it is more expensive than products we would normally consider buying but we did think the product was lovely and worth the money. You only need to use the tiniest amount so a 30ml bottle would last you ages.

Here is the list of ingredients for the Facial Oil:-

Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) oil*, Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil*, Prunus dulcis (sweet almond) oil*, Carthamus tinctorius (thistle) seed oil*, Rosa moschata (rosehip) seed oil*, Lecithin* (plant-derived emulsifier), Persea gratissima (avocado) oil*, Aroma [Pelargonium graveolens (rose geranium) oil*^, Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) oil*^, Tocopherol (natural vitamin E), Citral*, Geraniol*, Citronellol*, Linalool*, Limonene* (from essential oils). ^fairly traded *made with 99.9% certified organic ingredients.

The Gentle Cleanse smells so aroma therapeutic. The fragrance actually makes you want to remove your make-up. I don’t know about you but I can be quite lazy some times I really can’t be bothered to remove my make-up properly and just use a baby wipe. If I had this Gentle Cleanse to use even I would choose to remove my make-up properly. It has a beautiful scent as it contains Rosemary, chamomile and rose geranium. The product costs £15.95 for a 200 ml bottle, £8.95 for a 50ml bottle or £3.60

Here is the list of ingredients for the Gentle Cleanse:-

Aqua (spring water), ^*Elaeis guineensis (palm) oil, *Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, Cetyl alcohol (emulsifying plant wax), Cetearyl alcohol (emulsifying plant wax), Cetearyl glucoside (emulsifying plant wax), *Cannabis sativa (hemp) oil, *Olea europaea (olive) oil, *Althaea officinalis (marshmallow) extract, Glyceryl stearate (plant-derived moisturiser), *Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) oil, *Aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) powder, Sodium stearoyl glutamate, Aroma [^*Pelargonium graveolens (rose geranium) oil], *Chamomilla recutita (chamomile) extract, *Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) extract, Phenoxyethanol, Benzoic acid and Dehydroacetic acid (preservative system), Citric acid (pH regulator), *Geraniol, *Citronellol, *Linalool, *Citral, *d-Limonene (from essential oils). ^fairly traded *93.77% certified organic ingredients

I tested the No Scent Baby Lotion, No Scent Baby Wash and Shampoo and the Soothing Baby Salve with my daughter. I had no problems with any of these products but my favourite amongst them was the Soothing Baby Salve. It is amazing and really works! I just love the fragrance of the lavender and calendula. It really is soothing when you smell it from the tube. It is quite expensive at £9.70 for a 100ml tube but it works wonders. I used it on my daughter’s nappy rash and it had cleared up by the next nappy change. Even though I consider myself quite stingy this is one of those products that I wouldn’t begrudge paying nearly £10 for. You only need to use very little of the salve as a little goes a long way. I still have a small amount in my trial size tube so I will have to buy some more in the future. You can buy a smaller 30ml size tube for £3.85 or the trial size tube of 7ml for £2.85.

Green People say that the Salve can be used on baby’s hands, face, body and bottom…plus it can be used as a nipple cream for mum’s with cracked nipples. It has recently won “Best Eco Friendly Breast Treatment 2011” – awarded by midwives and mums.  The salve is  96% organic and it is suitable for delicate and sensitive skin. As the product is water-resistant it is ideal to be used as a nappy rash salve as it will prevent your child’s delicate skin from getting damp from their wet nappy. The website also says the product is  suitable for adults who are prone to eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis as it is a non aqueous cream that contains no Sodium Lauryl Sulphate or detergents.

Here is the list of ingredients for the Soothing Baby Salve:-

Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil*, Elaeis guineensis (palm) oil*, Cera alba (beeswax)*, Prunus dulcis (almond) oil*, Butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter*F, Cannabis sativa (hemp) seed oil*, Cetearyl olivate, Sorbitan olivate, Calendula officinalis (macerated marigold)*, Aroma [Lavandula angustifolia (lavender) oil*, Lavandula hybrida super (lavandin) oil*], Linalool*, Limonene* (from essential oils).*96% certified organic ingredients. Contains 5% Fairtrade certified Shea Butter.

The No Scent Baby Lotion and No Scent Baby Wash/Shampoo are both fantastic products but I would have preferred them if they had a tiny bit of natural fragrance to them.  As I prefer to use scented products I think I would be better off buying the ‘Lavender Baby Wash and Shampoo’ and the ‘Mum and Baby Lavender Moisturiser’ instead of the ‘no scent’ ones.  If your child has sensitive skin and is prone to eczema or psoriasis then you will hopefully find that the ‘No Scent’ products from Green People are just what you have been looking for. Not only have I used the No Scent products on my daughter but I have used them on myself too. I have sensitive skin and I have had no allergies or irritation at all from using these products. The Body Wash can also be used as a shampoo and a tiny little drop goes a very long way. If you squeeze it on to a sponge then it makes loads of glorious bubbles and if you swish it around in running water you can use it as a bubble bath. I love the consistency of the products…they are just right. Not too thick and not too runny. The lid on the tubes is very hard to open but although this is a little bit annoying it is worth the annoyance to know my daughter would have a struggle to try and open the tube (so she could squeeze it all out!). When used as a shampoo I have been very pleased with the clean results it gives. You do have to be aware you honestly only need a teeny bit of the product…if not you will end up doing what I did…and cover your child’s hair with tons of lather and bubbles! Although it looks pretty like that it’s not fun having to spend even a minute longer washing your child’s hair than you need to! I don’t now about your child but my daughter does NOT like having her hair washed and every extra minute of washing results in even more tears!  The baby lotion absorbs into the skin really quickly and it makes my daughter’s skin lovely and soft. . . . and my feet too! The products are quite expensive at £6.89 for a 150ml tube of No Scent Body Wash and Shampoo and £9.45 for a 150ml tube of No Scent Baby Lotion. but I think they are worth it because of the fact they are organic and free from nasties such as SLS

Here is the list of ingredients for the No Scent Body Wash and Shampoo:-

Aqua (spring water) , Sodium coco-sulfate (from coconut), Cocamidopropyl betaine (mild cleansing, foaming agent from coconut), Decyl glucoside (gentle foaming agent from corn), *Chamomilla recutita (chamomile) extract, Levulinic acid, *Aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) powder, Yucca schidigera (yucca) extract, Potassium sorbate (gentle preservative system), Citric acid (pH regulator). *81.80% certified organic ingredients

Here is the list of ingredients for the No Scent Baby Lotion:-

Aqua (spring water), *Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, *Prunus armeniaca (apricot) kernel oil, Cetearyl glucoside, Cetearyl alcohol, ^*Butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, ^*Theobroma cacao (cocoa) butter, *Calendula officinalis (marigold) extract, Glyceryl stearate, Levulinic acid, *Aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) powder, Sodium stearoyl glutamate, Sclerotium gum, Xanthan gum, ^Commiphora myrrha (myrrh) oil, Sodium citrate, Potassium sorbate, Citric acid. ^fairly traded *94.43% certified organic ingredients.

In conclusion I think you should definitely treat yourself to some Green People products. You don’t have to spend lots of money and buy full size – you could just start off by buying some sample sizes to see how you get on with them. Before being sent these products to review I would never have dreamt that I may contemplate spending nearly £10 on a 100ml tube of baby salve but now that I have seen the fantastic results from using it I would most certainly spend my money and buy some more in the future. I think any products from Green People would make fantastic gifts as they are luxurious and the recipient would feel spoilt. The baby products would make a perfect gift for a ‘baby shower’ or ‘new born baby’.
