The school holidays are here and I’m sure lots of you are packing for your summer holidays. As sun cream for kids is a summer essential you will probably be interested in my review of a couple of products from the Green People sun care range. I was sent a 150ml tube of Organic Sun Lotion with Lavender and a 200ml tube of Aloe Vera lotion and after sun. The Sun lotion is SPF25 and provides much needed UVA and UVB protection.

Both of the products are Organic and contain no Parabens, Lanolin, phthalates, artificial perfumes, petrochemicals or colourants. This means that they are really gentle on your child’s delicate skin and perfect for sensitive skin or skin prone to eczema or psoriasis.

The products are a higher price than I normally pay for sun care items but this is because of the natural ingredients used, the fact that they are organic and also because the company spend a lot of time and money making sure that their products are packaged and produced in an environmentally responsible way.  Green People are completely against animal testing and they use a lot of fairly traded ingredients…This is the kind of company I want to spend my money with! Plus you have the peace of mind that none of the products contain any nasty ingredients…like SLS.
The 150 ml tube of Sun lotion with lavender costs £15.95 and the 200ml tube of Aloe Vera lotion /after sun costs £10.50. Both products have a recommended shelf life of 6 months once opened. The sun lotion contains 81% certified organic ingredients and the after sun contains 94%.

This information about the natural UV filters used in the Sun Lotion is taken from the FAQ section on the Green People website:-

What active ingredients do Green People use as UV filters in sun-screens? Green People use two different sun-screens in our sun lotions. The first is Titanium dioxide, a naturally occurring white mineral that acts as a reflective barrier mainly to UVA radiation. Widely recognised as being non-toxic and inert, this is one of the sun-screen agents approved under European legislation.

The second ingredient is an extract from cinnamon leaf with the proper name of Isoamyl P-methoxycinnamate. This is effective against UVB radiation and is also on the approved European list. By using these two ingredients we are able to offer effective, natural protection against both UVA and UVB radiation.

I really can’t urge you enough to read the extensive FAQ on the Green People Sun Lotion. If you click here you will be taken to a PDF and then for the Sun Care section start reading from the bottom of page 43. Some of the really useful information can be found under the questions ‘ Sun Lotion – Star Rating – UVA protection’, ‘Sun lotions are they as effective as high street sun lotions?’, ‘Sun Lotions – Ingredients to avoid’ and  ‘Sun lotion- physical and chemical filters’.  Please take the time to have a look through the PDF as there is so much useful information on lots of different topics such as ingredients, packaging etc.

The sun lotion has the lovely fragrance of Lavender. Personally I really like Lavender scented products but I know a lot of people who can’t stand it. If you too don’t like Lavender then not to worry…Green People also sell a No Scent version of the sun lotion for kids. The After Sun lotion can be used as a moisturiser for after your child has been in the sun or as a general moisturiser for after a bath, etc. I have also been using the moisturiser on my skin as I just love the smell of it. It has the fragrance of Organic Aloe Vera, Calendula and Lavender. The Aloe Vera lotion used to be called ‘Top To Toe Lotion’ and you can read some customer testimonials of it here.

I have tested out these products on myself and my daughter. We have had no reactions to them and we love the natural fragrances. We would definitely recommend both products and we shall continue to use them after this review.

I have found the sun lotion quite hard to rub in completely because of the quite thick consistency. If you don’t rub it in properly you end up with the white cream visible on your skin but it just means you have to spend a little longer than normal making sure it is rubbed in properly.  Neither of us have got sun burn when using the sun lotion so I would say that means that it is doing it’s job. The Green People sun lotion doesn’t leave your skin feeling sticky like some brands do.

The after sun has been used primarily as a general moisturiser and it has a lovely soothing fragrance. It is really easily absorbed and leaves your skin feeling so soft and moisturised. A little goes a long way with this moisturiser so a 200ml bottle should last you a long time.

These products are also available in 10ml trial / travel sizes. The small sun lotion is £3.60 and the small after sun is also £3.60.

Green People is a company that specialises in organic body care products and the company was started in 1997 by Mumpreneur Charlotte Vøhtz.  Back in 1992 when Charlotte’s daughter Sandra was just 2 she found her daughter to be suffering from severe allergies, eczema and constant itching. She was determined to help Sandra overcome these problems and in the end she found that Sandra’s allergies were being triggered by chemical-based products such as body care products and household products. After she discovered what was causing the problem she eliminated the use of products with man-made chemicals and instead turned to natural alternatives. Charlotte made sure Sandra had a balanced Omega 3 and 6  intake and she used a herbal cleansing tonic on her skin. She found that Sandra’s skin soon cleared up and she stopped the constant itching.   Charlotte was so pleased that her natural remedies and home-made skin care products had helped her daughter and she wanted to introduce others to the wonder of natural products and hopefully help them too.  Charlotte already knew a lot about herbal medicine and with her background of 11 years in the pharmaceutical industry and a nursing background she felt she was ready to launch her own company ‘Green People’. After this decision she spent several years perfecting the products and the first ‘Green People’ products started to be sold in independent health food stores in August 1997.
