My #WastelessJourney – Make Yummy Toasted Cheese Sarnies From Leftover Cheese!

ao competitionThis is my entry into the AO competition – #WastelessJourney

There is a fab competition running over at bestbritishbloggers.co.uk and I wanted to get my entry in as the prize is a COOL Samsung RB Combi Range RB31FDRNDSS Freestanding Fridge Freezer in Stainless Steel with an RRP £429.

NICE prize! (See what I did there! 🙂 ICE! )

To enter the competition I need to write a blog post to tell you all what I do with my leftover food and share a recipe with you.

Well first I have a secret to share…. there isn’t normally much leftover food in my house as I love my food so I tend to eat it asap in case someone else gets to it first! However there are always bits of leftover cheese in the fridge. Don’t know why really as cheese is a particular favourite of mine but I tend to wrap up the last chunk up in a sandwich bag and then open a new block the next time round as I forgot I have a teeny bit of cheese left from before.

Anyhow….here is what I suggest you do if you too have leftover cheese in your fridge:-

Make Toasted Cheese Sandwiches!

Firstly because they are totally yummy but also because they are a great way to use up leftover bread and cheese. After all, we all want to use up leftover food as it means we can possibly put off doing the weekly shop by a day or so and that means the budget stretches a bit further. Phew!

Here is my recipe….

  1. Get your toasted sandwich maker out and turn it on so it can heat up. (You can usually buy these for under a tenner in the high street shops. My one is red to match my kitchen)
  2. Get 4 slices of bread (white/brown/wholemeal – whichever you have to hand) and butter one side of each slice.
  3. Raid your fridge for those cheesy chunks of loveliness! 🙂 Once you have found them grate them up onto a plate. You can also add a bit of leftover grated onion and some squishy chopped up cherry tomatoes that have been hiding on the back shelf of the fridge!
  4. Pop 2 slices of bread – butter side down (so the buttered side touches the hot plate) – onto the sandwich maker. Sprinkle your cheesy filling onto the top of each slice and then place the other 2 slices of bread on top of the filling so the buttered side faces up to the other hot plate.
  5. SQUUEEEZZEE the lid of the sandwich maker down so it compresses your sarnies. Clip down the lid and wait until the sandwiches are toasted. Not many minutes to wait…maybe 5 or so.
  6. Once they are toasted remove them from the sandwich toaster, cut onto triangles and serve with some fresh salad (so you actually use that bag of salad in the fridge that you bought to be healthy!) and serve with salad cream. Yum!

Enjoy your sarnies!
